Situated on East Street, Quillies is a gallery in Rhayader selling a variety of locally made crafts including pottery, textiles, jewellery and fused glass. Also on sale are craft kits which make lovely gifts for your creative friends and family. Gift vouchers are available all year round.
The name 'Qullies' comes from the circles of rolled up woollen strips that owner Rosemary uses in her own craft of standing wool, a traditional technique of rag rug making that reflects Rosemary's own passion for upcycling – using old materials and bits and pieces to create something new and unusual.
If you look around the shop you might spot new uses for old clothes, cutlery, OS maps, Coke bottles, food packaging and even the off-cuts from pig-pens. The ingenuity of the local makers shows how everyone can do something to tackle waste in our throw-away society and produce something different and beautiful. The words heard most often in the shop are “unique”, “unusual” and “quirky” and visitors are amazed at the talent and imagination of the local makers.
